Adam and his wife Demelza Haines founded their business, Welly’s Wonders, in 2013 to create timeless and original designs for babies and children.

All products feature the original work of Adam Murphy, who started work as an animator for Disney at just 15 years of age – one of the youngest animators to ever work for the studio.

He has spent over 25 years working as a lead artist and animator for Disney, Lucasfilm, Animal Logic and other major film and animation studios.

Adam has worked on some of the world’s biggest film franchises such as The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Lady and the Tramp, Bambi, Lilo & Stitch and the Lego Movie franchise.

Henty field day patrons will have the opportunity to have their portrait sketched by Adam in the Country Lifestyle pavilion, and hear him speak on how animated characters are constructed for movies.

“The caricatures take me about 10 to 15 minutes and I like to get the person to laugh or smile,’’ he said.

“It was a natural step for me as for years at Disney we all drew each other as a gag, and this is literally an extension of that.’’

Adam said animation for a single movie could take 80 animators working full-time for two years to complete.

“One to two pages of script comes in and we start on the story board – it’s a bit like a comic book and I am drawing fast and loose so it is virtually stick figures,’’ he said.

“It is incredible to see the transition to the finished product on the big screen – often I can recognise my own composition in the characters.’’

Adam said the Lego movies had created on-going business for the Australian studio, with television work “booming’’.

“I was straight out of school when I joined Disney but there were some key talented people there showing me the ropes,’’ he said.

“A lot of those guys are still in the industry – there is not a lot traditional animation taught anymore as a lot is computer based and there is no need to be a good draftsman.’’

Adam lives with Demelza in the Illawarra with their son, Llewellyn (Welly), Burmese cat, Boo Radley, and Border Collie, Maisie.

The family travels to markets in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra with their line of artwork, stationery and illustrated children’s books.

“Getting away to the markets with Welly’s Wonders enables me to interact with the general public,’’ Adam said.

“It is nice being part of the market community and there is great mutual respect.

“Our son Welly is our champion and he will sit at the stall with a book or ipad.’’

Demelza has a theatre background, training in Theatre Studies at Deakin University and Stage Management at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She has worked on more than 25 productions in the UK and Australia.

The Welly’s Wonders’ characters are based on her father’s tales of his childhood in South Wales.

Burton the Brave and Jenkins the Hare reflect her father’s memories and stories of close family friend and actor, Richard Burton (Jenkins being Richard’s actual surname).

The couple’s first illustrated children’s book is called Jenkins the Hare, and its story revolves around arguably their most popular character, Jenkins.

All of their original characters feature in the book as Jenkins sets off on an adventure to find his lost, beloved scarf.

It is written by Demelza and features 48 pages of original artwork by Adam.
