Seeding pioneer unveils new cutting-edge deep knife drill
Leading agricultural equipment manufacturer Bourgault is proud to unveil the latest innovation in precision seeding, the Bourgault 4420 Deep Knife Drill™, at the Henty Machinery Field Days.
Developed in partnership with Australian farmers, the Bourgault 4420 DKD™ is tailored to local agricultural conditions, enabling growers to experience unmatched seeding precision, efficiency, and adaptability.
Boasting an all-new frame design, the 4420 DKD™ is available in sowing widths of 12m and 18m and row spacings of 250mm and 300mm.
The 4420 DKD™ features a new generation frame and an all-new opener with an independent fertiliser knife (optimised for depths of 12cm to 16.5cm) and seed closer parallel to the packing wheel for improved seed placement and germination.
The large Hi-Flotation™ tyres, steerable front axle, and floating hitch ensure optimal depth control, superior tracking, and minimised soil compaction.
Third-generation WA farmer and director of Roma Farming Company, a 12,145ha mixed crop and lambing operation in the wheatbelt, Frank Varone assisted with in-field testing in 2023.
Frank was so impressed with the 4420 DKD™’s performance, he purchased the machine for the 2024 season.
“With the 4420, it almost doesn’t matter what the tines are doing,” Frank said. “The seed placement is always precise and the germination very even.
“Because it has good flotation, it's very even and accurate across the whole bar.”
Another key benefit is the 4420’s 5.5m transport width, applicable to both 12m and 18m models.
“The narrow transport width is good. It’s very compact and travels nicely down the road or through gates,” Frank said.
“Bourgault Australia have supported me all the way. I like their equipment, how it’s put together, and that they’re local so the service is good.”
