In-paddock weighing system for sheep to launch at Henty
The long awaited automated in-paddock weighing system for sheep will be launched by Optiweigh at Agtech Alley at the Henty Machinery Field Days.
The sheep version works in a similar manner to the Optiweigh cattle product. It is also set to deliver massive cost savings and productivity gains as users experience the benefits of having an automated weighing system giving real time sheep weight information and detect changes in weight gain trends within days.
Since 2019 Optiweigh has made in-paddock automated weighing of livestock a reality for over 650 farms in Australia.
Not having to yard animals for individual weighing has benefits in terms of reduced labour, cost and the avoidance of associated animal weight loss, while also providing opportunities to improve livestock sales returns.
Furthermore, the benefits that continuous weight monitoring can provide in terms of better decision making have only come to light through case studies from users.
These have demonstrated that real time animal weight information is leading to improved decisions around things such as nutrition and animal health.
The ultimate outcome from these decisions being made sooner and based on better quantitative information is improved productivity in terms of kilogram of livestock weight gain.
This in turn translates into lower CO2e per kilogram of meat and hence improves the farm’s environmental metrics.
