International textile designer and judge Laurel Judd has entered two garments in the Henty Natural Fibre Awards.

Award winning New Zealand fibre artist Laurel Judd will set the catwalk abuzz this year as the first international entrant in the Henty Natural Fibre Awards.

Ms Judd is a renowned knitwear designer and fibre artist who has won the supreme award at the Australian Wool Fashion Awards, and showcased her collection at Vancouver Fashion Week.

She uses machine knitting, unusual stitching techniques, felting, handcrafted buttons and embellishments to create innovative designer originals.

“I love to work in natural fibres, especially wool because of its unique characteristics,’’ Ms Judd said.

She runs a small business from home creating a seasonal fashion range, but her hobby is creating one off original designs for fashion and creative fibre awards.

“I just love to push myself and see my garments on the catwalk. I can spend months on entries and they become part of me,’’ Ms Judd said.

This is Laurel’s first foray into the Henty awards and she has entered two garments.

The first is a long evening gown made from knitted Merino wool, featuring a clever use of boning to allow the skirt to float about the floor.

It is teamed with a knitted, boned bodice covered in knit applique flowers and is completed with a choker and long gloves.

The second is a felted race wear ensemble – a complete look for an autumn race day or special daytime occasion.

The technique felts pure silk with wool producing an amazingly light fabric.

The outfit is completed with handcrafted hat, bag and gloves.

Ms Judd enjoys going a little further to create the accessories to finish the outfit.

She is a feature artist in the book “Stitch – Contemporary Artists in New Zealand’’ and is a respected national and international judge and tutor in machine knitting, textile art and design.

Laurel won the menswear, knitwear, children’s and race wear categories of the 2014 Australian Wool Fashion Awards and was the winner of the supreme award in 2013.

She showcased her collection at Vancouver Fashion Week and was invited to the Plitz New York Fashion Week in Beijing.
