Henty Farm Gate’s fine fare proves a field day focal point

From cupcakes to cooking appliances, bread to berries, and red meats to regional wines – it was a truly sensory experience at Henty’s Farm Gate Market Produce area this year.

Almost 30 exhibitors filled the giant marquee and outdoor food court, making it a highlight of the field days.

Farm Gate featured an array of guest chefs cooking in a stunning Masters electric kitchen over the three days.

Farm Gate co-ordinator Jason Crowley said the event catered for produce primarily grown in southern NSW and Victoria’s North East.

Mr Crowley, of Wagga Wagga, said a core philosophy of Farm Gate was giving consumers direct access to farmers and their value-added products.

He said producers were passionate about their product and loved to hear feedback.

Mr Crowley, who almost sold all his Henty stock of chilli sauces, described exhibitor and visitor feedback on Henty 2013 as “90 per cent positive’’.

Stars of the hit TV show Masterchef, Jimmy Seervai and Michael Weldon, used regional gourmet food and wine sourced from exhibitors in a “mystery box shopping tour’’ to cook up a storm on the final day of the field days.

Beechworth baker, entrepreneur and life coach Tom O’Toole and his wife Christine provided non-stop entertainment in the Masters kitchen on Wednesday.

Farm Gate exhibitor, Kimberley Rapsey, of Rockgilla Meats, Bonegilla, was back again after debuting her wholesale meat order business at Henty last year.

She was busy taking orders for value added lamb, beef and pork packs.

Cupcake queen Carly Flynn, of Wodonga, sold 280 decorated cupcakes on the first day, 400 on Wednesday and more than 500 on the final day.

Adding to the atmosphere was the Farm Gate sound stage featuring Danny Phegan’s trio, Shortreach, Wagga Wagga duo Hey Diddle Fiddle and the Voices@Henty finalists.
