Ausralia’s leading lucerne breeder Ian Kaehne will speak on multi-purpose lucerne varieties at the Upper Murray Seeds site.

Australia’s leading lucerne breeder Ian Kaehne hs set new standards of production for multi-purpose lucerne, and will be a guest at this year’s Henty Machinery Field Days.

Dr Kaehne will be on the Upper Murray Seeds site in 6th Farm Avenue, and was the breeder of varieties such as Hunterfield, Sceptre and Eureka during his 40-year career.

He will outline his recent breeding success stories of Silverado (winter activity nine) and Silverosa GT (winter activity seven), designed to meet the demands of the Australian climate.

Dr Kaehne will speak on the inbuilt, broad spectrum disease and pest resistance, rapid regrowth and superior heat and cold tolerance of these lucernes.

And, in the case of Silverosa GT, high levels of grazing and salt tolerance.

Upper Murray Seeds is a family-owned national seed business which enjoys the opportunity to connect with farmers at Henty and talk about how productive pastures can help grow their business.

This year, Upper Murray Seeds will have large planter boxes displaying improved pasture species such as Upper Murray Seeds’ proprietary ryegrass, lucerne and oats.

Agronomist Ashley Batten said the company’s seed was bred to perform and persist in the toughest conditions.

“If they don’t work for us, they don’t make it into the bag,’’ Mr Batten said.

“We’ve been attending Henty for 10 years and we always look forward to catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.’’

A bonus for this year’s visitors is the chance to go in the draw for $250 worth of proprietary ryegrass or lucerne seed.
